In May 2017, in Woodland, Washington, around 1:30 AM, Bruce DeKalb found himself a little thin black girl without two front teeth, desperately pleading at his front door,

“Hide me. They whip us with a belt.”

The little kid said she jumped out from her second-story window to seek help from being abused and needed a ride to Seattle. She dashed past Bruce and hid upstairs where his wife, Dana DeKalb, was sleeping.

“Don’t make me go back! They’re racists, and they abuse us!”

The scared little girl was Hannah Hart, the adopted daughter of their recently moved-in neighbors, Sarah and Jennifer Hart.
