The Two Missed Chances to Escape: The Canny Ong Abduction Case

She knew it was her last dinner in Malaysia.
But little did she know, it would be her last night alive.
Thousand miles away in the United States, Canny Ong received a distressing call from her family back in Malaysia. Her father had fallen ill with cancer.
Canny Ong was born and raised in Ipoh, Malaysia, before furthering her studies in the United States. There, she achieved a successful career as an IT analyst and also met the love of her life, Brandon Ong. The both settled in the United States.
Without hesitation, as the eldest child, she decided to return to her home country to be by her family’s side. She devoted her time to care for her father, and only after a successful surgery, she felt relieved enough to return to the States, where her career was put on hold and where her husband was.
On 13 June 2003, the night before she was supposed to leave, family and close friends decided to gather at Monde Restaurant in an upscale shopping mall at Bangsar Shopping Centre for Canny’s farewell dinner. Laughter filled the room, celebrating a successful surgery, a great spread of food, and the anticipation of Canny reuniting with her husband in the United States.
Canny noticed that her mother was getting tired from the gathering and decided to walk her out to her car before joining her friends to hang out again.
As they were about to leave, Canny realized that the parking ticket was in the car. While her mother and sisters joined the queue to pay at the Autopay station, Canny quickly made her way to the car to get the ticket.

20 minutes passed, and Canny was nowhere to be seen.
All calls went unanswered.
Worried, they set out to search for her, and soon realized the family car — a violet Proton Tiara — was not in the supposed parked spot. They noticed CCTV cameras around and immediately asked for help from the security. Initially, they faced…
